As close readers of The New York Times will attest, the paper of record has recently thrown itself headlong into what is unquestionably the most pressing social issue of our time: the ever-growing economic disparity between the rich and the super-rich. .

Properly executed, it would solve an ancient problem, supply an unquenchable demand and change the lives of millions of young hockey players. It was an automated goaltender. Every impromptu shinny game spoiled by the forlorn sight of an empty net could be suddenly salvaged by technology that can stand in for a human. It was a simple dream: That those who gather with sticks and pucks anywhere in the world would no longer be subjected to the indignity of an empty net. Operation SOS (Save-Our-Shinny) began with late night design sketches followed by trips to the hardware store for parts and frequently exasperating experimentation. Along with friends, an early prototype took shape. Then, an inventor's worst nightmare unfolded.
