Books are fine holiday outdoors gifts
Christmas is right around the corner, and that brings the usual question, what can I buy for the family outdoorsman or woman? Luckily, there are lots of answers. Personally, I like to read and down through the years I've found three books that I enjoy again and again. Any or all would make fine gifts. Possibly my favorite is "Under the Sea Wind" by Rachel Carson. It was written in 1941, a beautiful story of the sea and the animals that live in it. The second is "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. This one first saw print in 1854, a tale of a man who left civilized comforts, built a tiny cabin on the shore of Walden Pond in Massachusetts and lived off the land, planting a garden, foraging for berries and nuts and fishing for his dinner. .
The Tractor Room: a Deetz family favorite
I was just as bummed as the next Pho addict when Rice Jones closed, but my disappointment soon turned into curiosity when friends kept telling me to check out this locale's transformation into a hunting lodge-themed restaurant/bar by the owners of Hash House a Go Go. Deer heads and antler chandeliers in Hillcrest? The dining room was full when we pushed through the heavy, black velvet curtains of the Tractor Room at 8:30 on a Friday night, but somehow we were seated instantly. The crowd was a mix between well-off and a little older (we spotted San Diego Magazine Editor Tom Blair) and novelty-loving 20-somethings. The drink options are vast with a "Wine Library" we didn't even attempt and a stocked cocktail menu with appetizer drinks and a special section for Bloody Marys.
Product Review: Crimson trace lasergrips
Crimson Traces offers a wide product line integrating a laser sighting system directly into replacement handgun grips, hence the product name; Lasergrips. Lasers offer a sighting method where traditional sights may not be accessible. Lasers will allow you to aim your gun even if you are not able to line it up with your eyes, such as over and around objects and behind your back. While it might sound less than reasonable to shoot that way, there is more than one story of a officer having successfully used a laser sighted gun to shoot a criminal while the officer�s hands were tied behind his back or otherwise used in a nontraditional shooting position. Additionally, lasers offer a tremendous deterrent factor. An assailant may very well be less inclined to continue his actions when seeing a laser dot on his chest.
