Generating hope for soldiers
Vanessa Short's living room is stuffed with more than 100 shoeboxes, waiting to be sent to soldiers in Iraq. Her dining room table has become an assembly area where candy, granola bars, toiletries and goodies are spread out for family members to pick and choose as they create their Christmas packages. On Monday, Isaac, her 4-year-old son, filled a plastic shoebox with Juicy Fruit gum, deodorant, travel-size toilet paper, granola bars and beef jerky that will go to a soldier in his brother Specialist David Palmer's unit. Short is a mom but she's also a former U.S.
Turkey Day Traditions - Thanksgiving customs have strange roots
While the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner has always been the turkey, there are several other traditions that go along with the holiday. Here is a brief look at how some of these customs started. Shh! The parade is on While the annual Macy's Thanksgiving parade will celebrate its 80th anniversary Thursday, the first event was bland compared to the extravaganza it is now. In 1924, Macy's employees treated midtown Manhattan to a relatively small parade that included a few floats and zoo animals. However, that first parade, signalling the beginning of Christmas season, was a big hit. Four years later, helium-filled balloons were added to the lineup. They were released above the city in a grand finale, but the balloons unexpectedly burst above the Manhattan skyline. Safety valves and return address labels offering prizes for their return were added to the improved wayward balloons in 1929.
