How To Make Beef Jerky
Three cultures mix it up at huge expo
One can understand Cool Passion ("The Drink of the Aztec Gods"), Kosher Cajun New York Deli, Hot & Joy steak sauce, Rip 'n Ready chili, and the World's First Latke Snack at a food show devoted to Kosher, Latino and Asian food. But Jerky of the Jews? "No one else makes kosher beef jerky," explained Jonathan Waldstreicher, co-owner of Kosher Heaven. Waldstreicher and four fellow Brandeis University grads decided at a friend's wedding they needed to invent or produce something. And that something turned out to be jerky, which they nicknamed Jerky of the Jews. Why jerky? "Because I like it and no one else was making kosher jerky," Waldstreicher replied. Who's to argue? Jerky of the Jews was one of scores of products on display at a trio of food shows held last week at the Jacob K.
Woman braves winter weather from rooftop to support troops
RENSSELAER, N.Y. While U-S troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have endured extreme desert heat, one upstate woman is exposing herself to the winter weather to show her support. Lisa Robinson, of East Greenbush, has set up camp on the roof of an American Legion building to raise money for troops overseas. Robinson says her goal -- to stay put until she raises 25-thousand dollars -- is a small sacrifice compared to what the troops go through. She set up camp yesterday with a tent, sleeping bag, ceramic heater, reading material and mini-portable toilet. Robinson waved at her supporters as they drove by honking their horns, or stopped by to make a donation. Robinson says the troops usual requests include batteries, socks, anti-fungal foot powder, beef jerky, nonperishable food and dvds, among other items.
